When our warehouse has been in continuous use for a period of time, may be a year, two years or longer, you will find that the warehouse will gradually have some pallets damaged and eliminated in the course of operation, as your warehouse runs for a longer period of time, the eliminated pallets will be more and more.

How to dispose of wood pallets?

Wooden pallets are among the most commonly used and frequently discarded materials in the warehouse sector, leading to significant quantities of waste every year. Here are several practical methods for disposing these discarded wooden pallets:

Repair and Reuse

  • Method: Repair damaged pallets by replacing or fixing broken planks and nails to restore their functionality.

  • Advantages:
    Extends the lifespan of pallets, reducing resource waste.
    Cuts costs, especially for industries with high logistics turnover.

  • Applicable Scenarios: Lightly damaged pallets or cases where repair costs are low.

Recycling and Remanufacturing

  • Method: Collect irreparable pallets, dismantle them into wooden components, and use these materials to manufacture new pallets or other wood products.

  • Applications:
    Producing new pallets.
    Creating wooden packaging materials.
    Repurposing as construction materials (e.g., boards, partitions).

  • Advantages:
    Maximizes the reuse of wood.
    Reduces the consumption of fresh timber resources.

How to handle pallets dispose of different materials

Pallets dispose of different materials (e.g. plastic pallets, metal pallets, paper pallets, etc.) are treated differently from wooden pallets because of their different characteristics.

Plastic Pallet Disposal

Plastic pallets are handled with a major focus on recycling due to their durable and waterproof nature:

  • Repair and reuse: check for cracks or damages and make partial repairs (e.g. heat fusion welding or replacement of parts).

  • Recycling: Send used plastic pallets to recycling factories, crush them and use them as raw materials to produce new plastic pallets or other plastic products (e.g. pipes, packaging materials).

  • Secondary market sale: mildly damaged or old pallets can be resold to the secondary pallet market for small business or short-term use.

  • Degradation Disposal: Some plastic pallets are made of biodegradable materials (e.g. PLA) that can be decomposed under specific conditions to reduce environmental pollution.

Our recommended disposal priority is: Repair > Recycling > Resale > Degradation.

Metal Pallet Disposal

Metal pallets are commonly used for heavy duty material storage due to their durability and high load bearing capacity. Disposal options for discarded metal pallets include:

  • Repair and reuse: For welded parts or localized corrosion, they can be repaired by welding or rust prevention treatment.

  • Recycling and smelting: Waste metal pallets can be sent to recycling stations for smelting, where the metal materials can be processed again into new products, such as new pallets, construction materials or machine parts.

  • Creative transformation: In industrial decoration or furniture making, metal pallets can be transformed into unique tables, chairs or storage shelves.

Recommended processing priority: Repair > Recycling Smelting > Creative Transformation.

Paper Pallet Disposal

Paper pallets are commonly used for disposable export transportation due to their lightweight and environmental characteristics. Their disposal methods are as follows:

  • Recycling and remanufacturing: Discarded paper trays can be broken down into pulp through paper recycling plants for the production of recycled paper or paper products.

  • Composting: Unchemically treated paper trays can be mixed with other organic materials and composted for agricultural or horticultural use.

  • Incineration for Energy Recovery: As a biomass material, it is used as a fuel in highly efficient incineration facilities.

Recommended disposal priority: Recycling > Composting > Incineration.

Composite Pallet Disposal

Composite pallets are made from a variety of materials (e.g. a mix of plastic and wood). They are more difficult to dispose of and common methods include:

  • Repair and reuse: Repair structural damage to extend service life.

  • Recycling and dismantling: the different materials are separated and recycled. The plastic part is sent to a plastic recycling plant and the wood part is used for wood chips or biomass fuel.

  • Energy Recovery: If it is difficult to dismantle, it can be used as incineration material, but it requires strict environmental treatment equipment.

Recommended treatment priority: repair > dismantling and recycling > incineration.

Conclusion

The purpose of a business is to make a profit, so we usually prefer to recommend a more cost-effective way of disposing of pallets. We will only recommend destruction if there is really no better option.
